Visit our new temporary exhibition!

Our new temporary exhibition Culture for the worker?... presents the working class culture in Łódź and different cultural initiatives organized in the former Izrael Poznański factory. You will have a chance to learn about the history of the factory orchestra, sport club and choir!

Łódź is a city which needed to face a challenge of a fast development and an increasing number of people settling in Łódź that had diversified cultural background and different traditions. The big factories not only provided jobs but also were a place where, thanks to the owners and workers initiative, sport clubs and circles of interest were organized. The strikes of the factory workers in 1892 and in 1905-1907 in particular forced the factory owners and city authorities to allow the workers to unite in trade unions. Moreover, the factory owners wanted to streamline their employees attention away from the social problems towards more safe activities like culture. That was the reason for organizing different cultural initiatives for working class.

After Second Word War the great textile factories were the best place for implementation of socialist philosophy for creating culture solely for working class. In the times of economic changes after 1989 the factories were closed down and this was also the end for the culture solely for working class and also the end of supporting the activities in the working place.

If you wish to learn more, come and visit us! Exhibition will be closed in the mid of December. Feel welcome!
